Mrs. Patsy O. Lyons

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home for Mrs. Patsy O. Lyons, 50, 1516 N. Kansas Ave., who died Thursday, July 7, at a Topeka hospital. She had cancer.

She was born Oct. 6, 1932, at Ashdown, Ark., the daughter of Lee Dennis and Sarah Alice Wims Grice. She lived in Topeka for 33 years.

Mrs. Lyons was a member of Northland Christian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Small, Mrs. Kim Blodgett and April Lyons, all of Topeka; three sons, Jack Lyons, Mike Lyons and John Lyons, all of Topeka; her mother, Mrs. Alice Grice, Onaga; four sisters, Mrs. Katherine Terry, Hoyt, Mrs. Bessie Hoople, Lorenzo, Texas, Mrs. Essie Davis, Ashdown, Ark., and Mrs. Bertha Prather, Yuma, Ariz,; a brother, Johnnie Grice, Topeka; and eight grandchildren.

Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery, north of Topeka. Mrs. Lyons will lie in state from 3 p.m. today until 2 p.m. Sunday.

Dr. Rose M. Comstock

Dr. Rose Mae Comstock, 91, 4712 W. 6th, died Sunday, Sept. 18, at a local retirement home.

Dr. Comstock was a doctor of podiatry. She practiced in the Topeka area more than 50 years before she retired in 1963.

She was born July 18, 1892, at Wisner, Neb., the daughter of Thomas E. and Lena Haugen Comstock. She lived in Topeka 70 years.

She was graduated from D. William Scholl Podiatry College, Chicago, Ill.

She was a member of the Kansas Podiatry Association and a life member of the American Podiatry Association. She was also a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral.

Survivors include two brothers, Richard L. Comstock, Chillicothe, Ohio, and George H. Comstock, Hutchinson, and a sister, Mrs. Walden R. Peterson, Topeka.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Chapel of Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Dr. Comstock will be in state at Davidson Funeral Home after 1 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 W. 8th, Topeka, Kan., 66603.


Mrs. Elizabeth Waugh

Mrs. Elizabeth Brown Waugh, 89, 7220 Asbury Drive, died late Saturday, Sept. 17, at her home after a long illness.

She had lived at Eskridge 50 years before she moved to Topeka in 1966.

She was born Oct. 27, 1893, at Kansas City, the daughter of Frank L. and Mae Miller Brown.

Mrs. Waugh had attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi social sorority. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Topeka.

She was married to William K. Waugh May 12, 1917, at Kansas City. He died in 1966.

Survivors include two sons, William K. Waugh, Jr., Kansas City, Mo., and James D. Waugh, Topeka; a brother, Frank L. Brown, Bella Vista, Ark., six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Eskridge Cemetery, Eskridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 817 Harrison, Toipeka, Kan., 66612.

Howard Atwood

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Keene Wesleyan Church west of Dover for Howard Atwood, 73, Topeka. He died Saturday, Sept. 17, at a Topeka hospital.

He was a retired farmer and had lived his entire life in the Topeka and Auburn communities.

He was born April 16, 1910, near Auburn, the son of Loyal and Edna Holmes Atwood.

Mr. Atwood served with the Army in New Guinea during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Capitol Post No. 1.

Survivors include two brothers, Ralph Atwood and Joseph Atwood, both of Auburn; and two sister, Mrs. Julia Hanson, Harveyville, and Mrs. Violet Quinnet, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery. Austin Funeral Home, Eskridge, is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Hyatt

DENISON--Ralph Hyatt, 87, Denison, died Sunday, Sept. 18, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Hyatt was a farmer in the Ozawkie and Rock Creek areas. He worked as a coach carpenter for the Santa Fe Railway many years and operated a feed store at Ozawkie several years. He retired in 1951.

He was born May 25, 1896, northwest of Topeka, the son of David and Emily Morris Hyatt.

He served in the Army during World War I.

He was a member of Denison Union Church, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 488, and a 50-year member of Denison Masonic Lodge No. 372, all at Denison. He was a former member of Graham-Herber Post No. 3084 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Valley Falls.

He was married to Bessie Morris May 4, 1922, at Kansas City, Mo. She survives.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nellis-Hagge Funeral Home, Valley Falls. Burial will be in Denison Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Denison Union Church in care of the funeral home. Mr. Hyatt will be in state at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today until the service time.

Mrs. Pauline Atwood

AUBURN--Mrs. Beryl Pauline Atwood, 68, Auburn, died Saturday, Nov. 16, at the home of a daughter after a long illness.

Mrs. Atwood was a licensed practical nurse and had worked in the ostetrics department at Stormont-Vail Hospital 15 years before she retired. She earlier taught in rural Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties schools.

She was born Sept. 2, 1917, at Dover, the daughter of Clyde and Ethel Sage Starbird.

Mrs. Atwood was a member of Dover Federated Church, the Ladies Aid Society at the church and the Social Hour Club.

She was married to Wilbur R. Atwood May 3, 1938, at Alma. He died Nov. 12, 1962.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Ann Blankenship, Maple Hill, and Mrs. Beverly Corbet, Topeka; two sisters, Mrs. Opal Campbell, Dover, and Mrs. Lela Havener, San Francisco; a brother, Delbert Starbird, Dover, and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dover Federated Church. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Dover Federated Church, Dover, 66420. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home at Topeka is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mildred H. Stewart

Mrs. Mildred H. Stewart, 85, formerly of 129 N.W. Knox, died late Thursday, Nov. 15, at a Topeka hospital.

Mrs. Stewart had owned Stewart's Creamery in Denver and was a driver for Lowry Air Force Base in Denver.

She was born Aug. 28, 1900, at Topeka, the daughter of William Sherman and Marion E. Rice Morgan. She lived in Denver from 1941 to 1956 and in Topeka the rest of her life.

She was married to Archie E. Stewart April 8, 1922, at Topeka. He died in 1962.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jean Collier, Sneadville, Ga., and Mrs. Gloria Degand, Topeka; a brother, Marshall Rice, Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Perker-Price Mortuary.

Roy L. Baber, 54, Topeka, died Friday, Dec. 16, 1988, at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital. Cause of death is unavailable. Service arrangements are pending at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home.


Gerald L. Brown

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Holton, for Gerald L. BROWN, 52, Whiting. He died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1988, at a Topeka hospital after a long illness.

Mr. BROWN had been a carpenter for various contractors in Topeka.

He was born May 26, 1936, at Holton.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

His wife, Donneta P. BROWN, survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Sherri L. BROWN, at home; his mother, Gladys BROWN, Wetmore; and a brother, Galen R. BROWN, Wetmore. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery at Whiting. Mr. BROWN will lie in state all day Sunday at the funeral home, where relatives and friends will meet from 6 to 8 p.m.


Lawyer, former county auditor dead at age 81 Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home for Arthur L. Claussen, 81, a retired Topeka lawyer and former Shawnee County auditor. He died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1988, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Claussen was born may 25, 1907 in Chicago, the son of Homer and Myrtle Watson Claussen. He came to Topeka with his family in 1909, attended Lowman Hill, Clay and Potwin grade schools, and graduated from Topeka High School.

While growing up, Mr. CLAUSSEN worked for the the[sic] Steel Fixture Manufacturing Co.; a local ice company; Fraser's Grocers; and Santa Fe shops in Fort Madison, Iowa, Emporia, Gallup N.M., Holbrook, Ariz., Winslow, Ariz., and San Bernardino, Calif. While attending law school, he worked as night librarian at the Washburn Law Library and as a bill collector for Warren M. Crosby Co.

He was president of the interfraternity council, a member of the debate team and a member of Sagamore honor society at Washburn University. He graduated from the Washburn Law School in 1929 and began his law practice on July 1 of that year. He was county auditor about 20 years beginning about 1933. Mr. CLAUSSEN served in the navy during World War II.

He became a partner in the law firm of Crane, Martin and Claussen in 1951, and retired from legal practice in 1976.

He served a four-year term on the Topeka Police and Fire Civil Service Commission, and was chairman for two of those years. He was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board for several years, and was board chairman during the 1966 Topeka tornado.

Mr. CLAUSSEN was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, the Elks Club, Siloam Lodge No. 225 AF&AM, Scottish Rite bodies, 33rd degree, DeMolay Legion of Honor, the Kansas Bar Association and the Topeka Bar Association, which he served as honorary president of in 1977. He directed several bar shows for the state bar conventions in Topeka.

He was past president of Topeka Civic Theatre, and received the Topeka Civic Theatre Hall of Fame award in 1986.

He was married to Helen MACK on Sept. 7, 1927 at Lawrence. She died Sept. 14, 1987.

Survivors include a son, James L. CLAUSSEN, Topeka; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Entombment will be in the Mount Hope Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Civic Theatre 534 1/2 N. Kansas Ave., 66608.
